Vethfolnir

Vethfolnir, (Veh-th-FULL-nerr) sometimes shortened to Veth, is the goddess of life and light. She sits on top of the Great Tree, where, whenever she shakes off her down feathers, they drift to the mortal realm below where they become a soul to be born.

Veth is kind, bright, and cheerful, and she speaks in a sing-song-y voice. She had two daughters with the golden dragon god, Siguard, and is good friends with Pythia, Sulis, Dog and Erzulie. Most importantly, she's closest to her twin sister Nott, who has been her best friend since the beginning.

Physically, she looks like a giant golden bird with long talons and a crest that stands up on her head. Her feathers shimmer in the light, and her down give off a warm hue. In her humanoid form, she's tall, dark and beautiful, keeping her golden wings and talons.

Early life

Veth was one of the first gods created after the death of the genocidal beast. Originally, Pythia and Inua extracted a large egg out of the stomach of the beast with power that rivaled theirs. They decided that instead of one god of life and death, it would be better to have two gods split the responsibility, and therefore split the egg into twins. Pythia then took the two eggs and descended to the mortal realm.

While there, she heard a mortal woman sobbing out to her from a monastery-- when Pythia asked why, the woman explained that she had always wanted a child, but learned she couldn't physically have one. The goddess gifted the woman both of the eggs and told her to protect them with her life, to which she agreed. The woman ensured that they both were warm and safe, hardly leaving her room unless for basic needs or for sermons. One morning, she came back to her room to crying; the newly born goddesses had taken the forms of two human children, who the woman introduced to the monastery as her own.

Named Veth and Nott, the two girls were raised by their adoptive mother and the monastery members. However, as they grew older, the two began developing strange abilities, which made some of the members wary.

Pilgrimage

Vethfolnir started gaining the ability to heal at an early age, which was met with praise by the monastery. Although she enjoyed being able to help others, she hated the attention it cultured, often being told to perform miracles at sermons. The attention only got worse, as she began to be able to heal those in critical health, and even reverse aging. She often ran to her sister and her mother to hide. At the same time, Nott was beginning to gain her own abilities-- the touch of death. Believing that Veth was blessed by the gods, but her sister cursed and condemned, the members of the monastery began to be more aggressive to both girls as well as their mother.

Eventually, out of fear of Nott and her unholy skills, the monastery gave their mother an ultimatum; send Nott away from the monastery, and her and Vethfolnir would be allowed to stay. When their mother refused, they tried to bribe her by offering the monastery to Veth once she was of age. Veth stated that she would stay with her sister no matter what, and the three were sent away from the church and officially banned.

Heartbroken, Vethfolnir ran off and cried, with her tears leaving a trail of fertile ground. Nott and her mother found her in the middle of an orchard, where her crying had grown a small seed into a glowing sapling. Their mother reassured the two that she would never leave them, and told them that they would grow stronger roots where ever they would end up. To prove her point, she dug up the sapling to take it with them. Through out their travels, Veth and Nott were taught by their mother that both life and death were part of the natural flow of time, and both should be honored equally.

Planting of the tree and godhood

By the time they had finished traveling the mortal realms, Veth and her sister had matured, and their mother had grown old. They retired on the top of the largest mountain on the realm, where their mother had grown weak from the climb. Veth, who had grown strong with her healing and life abilities, offered to heal her and reverse her aging. Their mother declined, insisting that aging and death was a part of the journey, and that it was something to be earned instead of reflected on as a punishment. She used the last of her strength to help plant the tree and instruct the two about their roles in the universe as the goddesses of life and death. As the two girls mourned their mother, the small sapling grew into the Tree of Life.

The two heeded their mother's words, with Veth taking the mantle up in the canopy of the tree and becoming the goddess of life and light for the mortals. She ensured that whatever souls she had created with her feathery down eventually returned to her sister, who nested in the reverse of the tree. Later, as a matured goddess, she fell in love with the mortal warrior Siguard, who became a god through the blessing of the dragons.

Personality

Overall, Vethfolnir is sweet and kind, with only a hint of a devious side to her. It's in her nature to heal, nuture, encourage and praise. Some gods find her annoying, though, due to her habit of being so positive. She hesitates to be strict with her souls, which can cause conflict.

When with Nott, the closeness she has with her sister is on full display despite their stark differences. They complete each other's sentences, and one will always stand up for the other, without fail. Behind closed doors, Veth confides her insecurities to her sister, often asking her for advice. She also talks to her mother often, who is now an infamous spirit who wanders both of her daughter's realms like she did when they traveled together.
